The stars represented a new constellation, a sign of hope and freedom.
Fast forward to 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made June 14th officially Flag Day. Then in 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed a law making Flag Day a national observance. While it's not a federal holiday, it's still a big deal for many Americans.
